In short: Pick Valletta if you want history, culture and evenings in a beautiful old city. Pick Sliema if you want to swim, shop and have an easy seafront base. They are ten minutes apart by ferry, so you will see both either way.

Why choose Valletta
Valletta is one of the most beautiful small capitals in Europe. Staying inside the walls means early mornings in empty baroque streets, sunset at the Upper Barrakka Gardens and dinner a few steps from your door. Museums, St John's Co-Cathedral and the Grand Harbour are all on foot.
The trade-off is that Valletta homes are in historic buildings: lifts are rare, rooms can be less bright, and there is little outdoor space. Evenings are calmer than in Sliema or St Julian's.
Why choose Sliema
Sliema is built for easy days by the sea. The promenade runs for kilometres, you can swim from the rocks in summer, and there are cafés, supermarkets and shops on every street. The ferry from the Strand takes you to Valletta in about ten minutes, and you are a short walk from St Julian's.
It is busier and more modern than Valletta, and homes here are more likely to have balconies, sea views and lifts.
Our recommendation
For a short city break of three or four nights, or if this is your first time, stay in Valletta and take the ferry to Sliema. For a week or more, with children, or if swimming is a priority, stay in Sliema and take the ferry to Valletta. If you want a third option with real local character and lower prices, look at the Three Cities across the harbour.
